Gouache is my favorite go-to medium for sketching out ideas in color in the studio, or for taking quick notes while out in the field. It’s a great blend between watercolor and acrylic paints, and allows for a lot of versatility that is somewhat reminiscent of oil paints. I get the most out of gouache studies when I use them as reference for larger oil paintings in the studio. I have found that the oil painting always turns out more true to the original intentions I have with that particular piece.
