About Bryce

My name is Bryce Samuelson and I am a 33-year old landscape artist currently based in Orem, Utah. I was born in Arizona and grew up there until moving to Washington State for my teenage years. Although I have a background in civil engineering and architectural drafting, in 2019 I turned to oil painting in order to pursue a career in fine art. Primarily self-taught, I have studied intensively through workshops, books, personal practice, and the guidance of great mentors such as Kimball Geisler. I am an expressive realist painter, using strong shape design, and interesting color & value relationships, to convey light and my emotional connection to the land. I enjoy applying alla prima methods, as well as experimenting with more traditional layering methods - all while primarily using oil paints. I paint en plein air (in the open air) mostly as a tool to learn from nature - the master of composition - and then return to my studio and use these studies as a springboard for further studies and larger, more polished pieces. In Utah, there is no shortage of breathtaking natural vistas, ranging from snowcapped mountains & lakes in the Uinta mountains to the hot, red-rock mesas of Southern Utah.

Being in nature fills me with a sort of peace and sense of smallness that runs deeper than I can express. As naturalist John Muir said, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks”—a truth I have found exists in the creating and sharing of art. My work has appeared in juried exhibitions and national publications, earning honors such as an Award of Merit from the Springville Museum of Art, and have received several awards at plein air competitions throughout the Midwest, including First Place at the Wasatch Plein Air Paradise competition in 2024, and Second Place at the Driggs Plein Air Festival in 2025. My paintings are held in private collections throughout the country, and outside of exhibitions my work can be found at David Ericson Fine Art, Four Lemons, Fox Group, or on Instagram @bsamuelsonart.

Welcome to the journey I am on in the pursuit of beauty, serenity, wonder, and connection.
